Getting to Hanoi from Bac Ninh!

There are two simple ways to travel from Bac Ninh to Hanoi:

  1. Take a taxi or Grab.
  2. Take a bus.

My wife, with great emphasis, urged me to never take the bus and to only use Grab when traveling with her mother. However, since the one-way taxi fare from Bac Ninh to Hanoi costs between 25,000 to 30,000 KRW, it seemed too expensive to consider. So, we decided to give the bus a try!

The building on the left is the bus terminal!

We were really lucky to find this terminal. Originally, we weren’t planning to head to Hanoi. Instead, we intended to visit a travel agency in Bac Ninh to book a package trip for the next day. However, no travel agencies were in sight.

After wandering around for about an hour, we thought, “Let’s just head to Hanoi, do some sightseeing, and book the package at a travel agency there.” As we were debating whether to take a taxi, we stumbled upon this place purely by chance.

We entered through the side entrance, not the main one. I think it was because there were so many vehicles, and we just walked in without much thought.

This is the main entrance.
Most people enter and exit through this spot.

This is the door on the right side.
Here, buses enter through the right (the entrance in the photo), pick up passengers at the main entrance, and exit through the left.

For reference, the restroom can only be accessed through the right-side door (where the buses enter), and they usually charge a fee.

Interestingly, my mother used the restroom there for free. When she told them she didn’t have money since I was holding it, they simply let her use it without charge.

When you enter through the main entrance, you’ll see the waiting area.
The photo above is taken from the opposite direction.

In the waiting area, there was a timetable listing the buses heading to various destinations.
There was a small convenience store in the waiting area, and when I told the store owner that I wanted to go to Hanoi, they didn’t understand me at all. 😢
However, when I asked about the location of the restroom since my mother needed to use it, they kindly explained it in detail.

This photo, captured from a video, is quite messy.
The far end of the photo shows the right-side entrance where buses come in, as seen from above.
Seeing so many buses parked here made me realize, "Oh, this must be a bus terminal!" 😊

This is where you catch a bus, and for Hanoi-bound buses, there are Route 54 and Route 212.
I read a post saying that the 212 bus doesn't have air conditioning, so we mainly took the 54. Additionally, the 212 is more like a village bus in size, while the 54 is a standard city bus, so we preferred taking the 54.

This is inside Bus 54!
It’s exactly like a standard city bus.
I don’t remember the exact fare, but it was less than 10,000 VND per person.

When you board the bus, a conductor (usually a man or a woman) will come around. You pay them directly and receive a ticket on the spot.
For just about $1 round trip, you can travel between Hanoi and Bac Ninh! 😂
The ride from Bac Ninh Terminal to Hanoi takes a little over an hour.

We used both Grab and the bus depending on our schedule and convenience. 😊
By the way, we only boarded the bus at that terminal.

Even though there were bus stops closer to our accommodation, we walked 20-30 minutes to the terminal to board. Why? Because boarding at the terminal guaranteed us a seat for the journey!

The place to get off Bus 54 is Long Bien.
The Long Bien stop is a hub where many buses in Hanoi make stops.

When heading back, you can wait for the bus on the opposite side of where you got off.
However, simply waiting might not guarantee that you’ll be able to catch the bus.

You need to wait at the spot circled in red, as that’s where the bus will stop!
When the bus approaches, you must move faster than anyone else to get on.
Otherwise, you’ll end up standing for the entire hour-long ride back to Bac Ninh.

I’ve had to stand on the way back before, but I always made sure my mother had a seat. After all, I’m a fast Korean, after all!  😊

Because boarding at this stop was so challenging, I thought about getting off at the next stop to catch the bus from there. However, the fare collector told me to get off here.

I guess Long Bien is both the final and starting stop for the route. 😂
